I’ve had some contact with Paul Boag previously, having written for the Boagworld blog. I don’t always agree with everything he says (and to be fair, Paul often posts something a bit “out there” to get a reaction and to provoke thought), but he’s just posted an AudioBoo which is utterly spot on.
Go listen to it — http://audioboo.fm/boos/78321-design-and-code-don-t-overly-matter
I think design and code ARE important but sometimes the issues surrounding these can hide the real reason we’re building the site in the first place. I can think of a few sites which have suffered due to a “.NET is better v PHP is better” argument. And yes, I do include some of the sites I’ve been involved in that list!
We all need to remember that a site is a communication tool primarily — it may be delivering information or aiming to sell to it’s visitors (or whatever), but either way, it’s a communication device.
So, Paul has a point (well, this time!)
